How much does pool heater repair cost?

Angi reports a national average of $476 for pool heater repair. Most homeowners spend $166 to $798, based on 1,403 verified projects, on a page updated October 5, 2026.

These are national figures. They are not DFW prices, and they are not Marina Pool Services prices. Marina does not publish prices. It quotes each job.

Heater type Angi repair range (2026)
Electric $200 to $1,200
Natural gas $150 to $750
Solar $50 to $400

Angi also lists repair costs by pool type: $165 to $790 for chlorine pools and $500 to $1,500 for saltwater pools. It adds that heater type and pool water, saltwater or chlorine, drive corrosion risk, parts and repair complexity. Angi also says to set aside $150 to $1,000 for add-ons such as filter replacement, draining or pool light fixes during repairs.

How much does a new pool heater cost?

Angi’s installation page, updated September 15, 2026, reports a national average of $3,100 from 1,019 verified projects. Most homeowners pay $1,864 to $4,351.

Heater type Angi installed range (2026)
Gas or propane $1,500 to $6,000
Electric resistance $1,000 to $6,000
Heat pump $2,500 to $7,500
Solar $2,500 to $9,500

For a gas heater, Angi splits the cost into $1,000 to $4,500 for the unit and $500 to $1,500 for labor. For a heat pump, it says $2,000 to $6,500 for the unit and $500 to $1,000 for labor. Heat pumps need a dedicated electrical circuit and heat more slowly than gas, according to Angi.

What extras can raise the bill?

Angi lists utility hookups and other items separately.

Item Angi range
New gas line $500 to $2,000
Electrical circuit $250 to $2,100
Water lines $350 to $1,900
Old heater removal $25 to $50
Permits (new gas line, some projects) $100 to $500

Pool size matters too. For gas heaters, Angi lists $1,000 to $2,500 installed for a 10,000-gallon pool and $2,500 to $4,000 for a 25,000-gallon pool. Gas, electrical and permit work follows local rules. A qualified pro should do it. We do not give gas or wiring steps.

Should I repair or replace?

Use these Angi rules as a start:

  1. If the yearly maintenance and repairs reach 50 percent of the cost of installing a new unit, consider replacing it.
  2. If the unit is under five years old, Angi says a service visit is the best first step.
  3. If more money is in the repair than the heater cost new, Angi says replacing is worth it.
  4. If the unit is older than ten years, Angi says to replace it regardless of the issue.

Those are one source’s rules of thumb. A technician should look at the heat exchanger, igniter, pressure switch and flow. A cracked heat exchanger changes the math. Water chemistry matters too, because corrosion and scale shorten heater life. Our pool heater buyer’s guide compares gas and heat pump models, and the equipment lifespan guide helps judge age.

What does it cost to run a heater?

Angi’s monthly heating estimates for 2026:

Heater Monthly range
Gas line $200 to $400
Propane $200 to $850
Electric resistance $175 to $600
Heat pump $120 to $200
Solar $0 to $10

These are national averages. Your bill depends on your pool, your climate, your utility rates and how often you run the heater. Angi says a pool cover can cut energy costs by 50 to 90 percent.

Is my heater problem a repair issue?

If the heater will not light, our post on what to check when a pool heater will not ignite lists basic checks before you call. Symptoms and typical causes:

Symptom Possible area
No heat, no ignition Igniter, gas supply, pressure switch, flow
Heater short cycles Low flow from a dirty filter or closed valve
Water turns cold fast Undersized unit, no cover, heavy evaporation
Rust or corrosion Water chemistry, age

This is a guide to where a technician looks. It is not a diagnosis.

What should I ask for in a quote?

  1. Heater brand, model and BTU or tonnage.
  2. Whether gas line, electrical and permit work are included.
  3. Who does the gas and electrical connections.
  4. Whether old heater removal is included.
  5. What the company says covers a failure. Get it in writing.

Marina Pool Services lists pool heater troubleshooting and repair, and new heater installation, on its pool heater repair page. It also services Raypak, Pentair, Hayward and Jandy equipment. For the full picture of what you pay for pool care, see the pool service cost guide.

How do I compare heater numbers fairly?

Angi builds its ranges from projects reported by Angi Pros, so they reflect what homeowners across the country paid. A DFW job can land above or below them. Ranges are wide on purpose. A gas heater from $1,500 to $6,000 covers small and large pools, easy and hard hookups, and basic and premium units.

To compare, ask each company for the heater model, the BTU or heat pump size, and a list of what is included. Ask about the gas line, the electrical circuit, permits and removal. Then compare totals. A low quote that leaves out hookups may cost more in the end.
