Keller keeps a twice-weekly watering schedule year-round, and its drought stages add limits on pools. Stage 1 restricts draining and refilling, Stage 2 bans automatic fill valves, and Stage 3 bans draining, filling and refilling. These rules are as of October 2026 and come from the City of Keller’s water restrictions page.

What are Keller’s normal watering rules?

Keller runs a twice-weekly lawn watering schedule all year. The city also bans watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on every day, even allowed days.

Address type Allowed days
Residential, ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 Wednesday and Saturday
Residential, ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 Thursday and Sunday
Non-residential Tuesday and Friday
All addresses No watering on Monday

These rules cover lawn watering. They are not a pool rule. Pool rules start with the drought stages below.

What do Keller’s drought stages say about pools?

The city page says drought stages are determined by the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD). Each stage adds measures.

Stage Pool rules in the city’s list
Stage 1 (Water Watch) Restricts draining and re-filling swimming pools
Stage 2 (Water Warning) Prohibits filling pools with automatic fill valves
Stage 3 (Water Emergency) Prohibits draining, filling or refilling swimming pools, wading pools and Jacuzzi-type pools. Existing pools may be filled to maintain levels, but not with automatic fill valves

Stage 2 also limits outdoor watering with sprinklers to once a week. Stage 3 prohibits all outdoor watering.

The page lists the stages. It does not name the stage in effect today. Check the city page before you drain or refill.

Can I still top off an existing pool?

Stage 3 says existing pools may be filled to maintain pool levels, but not with an automatic fill valve. Stage 1 restricts draining and re-filling, and Stage 2 bans automatic fill valves. The page gives no other top-off rule for those stages, so read the stage carefully. If you are not sure, call the city’s Environmental Services office at 817-743-4092 or 817-743-4094, the numbers on the page.

An automatic water leveler tops off the pool without your input. If Stage 2 or Stage 3 applies, the city bans filling with an automatic fill valve. Turn the valve off and top off by hand if the city allows it.

Do the stages change how I clean the pool area?

Stage 1 also prohibits hosing off paved areas such as driveways and sidewalks, and hosing off buildings and windows. A pool deck is a paved area, so ask the city before you hose one down during a stage. The same page limits vehicle washing to a bucket or a hose with a turnoff valve in Stage 1. Sweeping the deck is a safe choice that uses no water.

How do I keep pool water loss low during water restrictions?

Evaporation is the usual cause of falling water level. A pool that drops fast may have a leak instead. Our pool leak bucket test guide shows how to tell the two apart.

Steps to follow when a stage is in effect:

  1. Check the stage on the city page.
  2. Turn off any automatic fill valve if Stage 2 or Stage 3 applies.
  3. Top off by hand only if the stage allows it.
  4. Skip a drain and refill unless a pro advises it and the stage allows it.
  5. Test the water after any added water.

A big drain and refill is the step most likely to hit a restriction. Read about water restrictions and drought in our glossary.

Where is the official source?

The City of Keller posts the rules on its water restrictions page. The page lists the ordinance and the drought plan. Rules change, so read the page again before you act. To report a violation, the page lists 817-743-4080.
