Do you need to close your pool in North Texas?
Usually no. Most Tarrant County pools stay open all winter, and the owner relies on freeze protection to keep water moving on cold nights. A full close, also called winterization, is a choice for specific cases, not a rule.
Our winters are short and swing a lot. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth lists November 22 as the average first freeze at DFW and March 12 as the average last freeze. That window is data through the 2023-2024 winter. The earliest freeze on record is October 22, 1898, so a cold front can show up before you expect it.
What do the manufacturers say?
They split the advice by how cold and how long. Pentair says that if the forecast calls for 45 degrees F or lower, you can consider a full closure. If you cannot close in time, it says to keep the pump and automation running. Hayward says that during deep freeze conditions all pumps must run while temperatures are below freezing.
Here is what each source tells you to do:
| Situation | Manufacturer guidance | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Short freeze, power on, automation installed | Turn on freeze protection in the automation system | Pentair |
| Short freeze, no automation | Run pool equipment 24/7 until temperatures return to normal | Pentair, Hayward |
| Forecast of 45 degrees F or lower | Consider a full closure | Pentair |
| Freeze with power outage | Turn off all pool equipment breakers, then follow drain steps and call a pro | Hayward, Pentair |
| Ice on equipment | Do not turn power back on; wait for it to melt | Hayward |
When should I close the pool instead of running it?
Close the pool when you cannot count on water moving. That means a long freeze, a risk of outages, or equipment with no working freeze controls. The February 2021 storm shows why. The National Weather Service recorded a low of -2 degrees F at DFW on February 16, 2021. DFW stayed at or below freezing for 139 straight hours, from 5 pm February 13 to noon February 19. A pump that runs on a timer and loses power in a stretch like that has nothing to protect it.
Consider winterizing when any of these are true:
- Your forecast shows several days below freezing in a row.
- Your power has failed in past storms, or the utility warns of outages.
- You have no freeze guard or no working air sensor.
- Your equipment pad is exposed to wind.
- You will be away and cannot check the pump.
Winterization is not the same as turning equipment off. Marina’s freeze guard page says water left in pumps, filters, heaters, and pipes is what freezing affects. The right approach depends on the equipment, the plumbing, and whether the pool will keep running.
What does a full close involve?
Pentair describes the steps in its freeze tips. A pool professional can walk you through them for your own system.
- Remove deposits from the pool walls with a brush or cleaner, which helps keep black algae and other problems from setting in.
- Test the water. Pentair says to shock the water before adding winterization chemicals, and that stabilizing the water lowers the chance of an algae bloom or scaling.
- Remove pool cleaners, booster pumps, and detachable accessories.
- Store removable equipment where the air stays above 40 degrees F, such as a shed or the back of a garage, if your pro says to store it.
- Have a winter cover ready to guard against sleet and snow and to help hold pH steady until the front passes.
Pentair also says to keep the filtration system and pump running while you wait for a pro to close the pool.
What if I keep the pool open?
Then freeze protection has to work every cold night. The pump needs power, a clear basket, and a controller that starts it at the right temperature. Our posts on pump settings in a freeze and the pre-freeze checklist cover the details. If your system does not start on its own, see what to check when freeze guard is not working.
Keep these points in mind:
- Freeze protection moves water. It does not heat the pool.
- It protects equipment during short freezes only. Jandy’s manual says an extended freeze or outage calls for shutting the pool down completely.
- A winter cover helps with sleet, snow, and pH, but Pentair lists it as a late step, not the first one.
- Keep the pump basket and skimmer baskets empty so flow is strong.
Should I call a pro before the first freeze?
Yes, if you are not sure how your system is set up. Pentair’s own first tip after watching the weather is to call your pool professional. Marina Pool Services inspects existing freeze guard settings, controls, connected equipment, and circulation, and can help decide whether you need freeze guard setup, winterization, or equipment repair. Frequently asked questions
Do I have to winterize my pool in Texas?
Not always. Many Texas owners keep the pool open and let the pump run during a freeze. Pentair suggests considering a full closure when forecast temperatures drop to 45 degrees F or lower. Your equipment, your controls, and the length of the freeze decide the right plan.
When is the first freeze in Dallas-Fort Worth?
The National Weather Service Fort Worth lists November 22 as the average first freeze at DFW, based on records from 1898 through the 2023-2024 winter. The earliest on record is October 22, 1898. Any given year can differ, so watch the forecast.
What if the power goes out during a freeze?
A running pump needs power. Hayward and Pentair both say to turn off the pool equipment breakers and follow their drain steps if power is lost below freezing. Call a pool professional for help, and do not restore power to iced equipment.
Is a winter pool cover enough?
A cover helps with sleet, snow, and pH, but it does not protect pipes or equipment. Pentair lists a winter cover as one step among several, and says moving water and a professional check come first.
