Motor bearings

Motor bearings are parts that let the motor shaft spin, and worn ones make a screaming sound.

Bearings sit at each end of the motor. Water from a bad shaft seal or just plain age wears them down. A worn bearing gives a high squeal or grinding sound, often loudest at startup.

A squeal means the motor is on borrowed time. Replacing bearings is possible, but if the motor is old, replacement of the whole motor is often better. Turn the pump off if it screams. Running it longer can cause heat, a trip, or a seized motor. Call a pro.
