Shaft seal

The shaft seal is a small seal that stops water from leaking along the motor shaft.

The shaft seal sits between the wet end and the motor. When it wears, water drips from under the pump. That water can reach the motor and ruin the bearings.

A drip at the seam between the pump and motor is the usual sign. Seals wear faster with heat, running dry, or old age. A seal is a low-cost part. Replacing it early can save the motor, but the job needs the pump opened and the power locked off. Call a pro if you are not sure.
