Single-speed pump
A single-speed pump runs at one fixed speed, and newer federal rules limit new sales.
Single-speed pumps run at full power whenever they run. They are simple and still common in older pools, but they use more electricity than newer designs.
The U.S. Department of Energy sets efficiency standards for new dedicated-purpose pool pumps, which is why new single-speed models are scarce. If your old pump fails, you may be steered toward a variable-speed pump as a replacement. A pro can check the motor, seals, and capacitor to see if repair makes sense first.
