Suction entrapment
Suction entrapment is a hazard where strong suction at a drain traps a swimmer under water.
A broken, missing, or poorly designed drain cover can hold a body part or hair against the drain. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act set drain cover standards because of this risk.
Check covers for cracks and loose screws. Teach children to stay away from drains. Know where the pump shutoff is. Do not swim with a damaged cover. Ask a pool pro whether your drains meet current standards.
