Drain cover
A drain cover is the grate over a pool drain. Approved designs help prevent suction entrapment.
Drain covers keep hair and body parts away from strong suction. The federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act requires drain covers to meet the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 standard or a later version. CPSC enforces the rules for public pools and spas.
For a home pool, check that every cover is whole, screwed down, and not cracked or faded. Replace covers that are damaged or missing. Covers also have a life span marked by the maker, so look at the label. Do not use the pool until a damaged cover is replaced.
