Copper ionizer
A copper ionizer is a device that adds copper to the water to slow algae, and chlorine is still needed.
A copper ionizer releases small amounts of copper into the water. Copper helps keep algae down, so the pool needs less chlorine. It does not make a pool chlorine-free.
Copper has a downside. Too much, or low pH, can cause blue-green or dark metal stains on plaster and hair. Keep copper within the maker's range and test for it. You still need free chlorine in the water, as the CDC minimum applies to public pools. Clean the electrodes on schedule.
