Surfaces and decks
Efflorescence
Efflorescence is a white, powdery mineral deposit that seeps out of concrete, stone, or grout.
Water moves through concrete and carries salts to the surface. When the water evaporates, the salts stay behind as a white crust. You may see it on decks, coping, and waterfeature stone.
It is usually cosmetic. But it also points to water moving through the material, so check for leaks, bad drainage, or failed joints. Brush off dry deposits and fix the water source. If it returns, look at the sealant and the drainage around the deck.
