Water chemistry
Borates
Borates are a water additive some owners use to buffer pH and help prevent algae.
Borates are optional. Some owners add them to soften the feel of the water, steady pH, and make algae growth harder. They do not replace chlorine.
They are most common in saltwater pools. A borate level needs its own test, and the right amount depends on the product you use. Read the manufacturer's label and your salt system's manual first, because some makers set limits. Borates do not leave the water except through draining or splash-out. Ask your pool pro before adding them.
