Water chemistry

Water balance

Water balance is the right mix of pH, alkalinity, hardness, and stabilizer for safe, clear water.

Balanced water is easier on your swimmers, your plaster, and your equipment. When one number drifts, the others usually follow. High pH weakens chlorine. Low pH eats metal. Hard water leaves scale.

The main numbers are pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid, along with sanitizer. Test weekly in swim season, and after big storms. Fix alkalinity first, then pH. Ask your pool pro to explain each reading, so you know what to change. The Langelier index gives one score for the whole picture.
