Chlorine odor

Chlorine odor is a strong smell that usually signals chloramines, not too much chlorine.

A pool with a strong chlorine smell usually has too little active chlorine, not too much. The smell is from chloramines, which build up when chlorine bonds with waste.

CDC says chloramines irritate eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract. Test combined chlorine. If it is above 0.4 ppm, a breakpoint chlorination can clear the odor. Shower before swimming helps too. If the smell returns fast, look at circulation and filter health.
