# Salt Cell Error Codes: Low Salt, Check Cell, No Flow

A salt cell warning usually means one of three things: low salt, a dirty or worn cell, or not enough water flow. Hayward says to clean the cell and test the salt with a meter before you add salt. Pentair lists salt levels where chlorine drops or stops. Check your own manual.

## What do salt cell error codes mean?

Most warnings fall into three groups: low salt, a dirty or worn cell, or no flow. The names differ by brand and model. Your manual is the final word. This post uses the Hayward AquaRite troubleshooting guide and the Pentair IntelliChlor manual as examples.

A [salt chlorine generator](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/salt-chlorine-generator) turns salt in the water into chlorine. The part that does the work is the [salt cell](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/salt-cell). If the system stops making chlorine, the pool can turn cloudy or green fast in Texas heat.

## What do the common warnings look like?

Warning

Likely meaning

First check

Low salt / Check salt

Salt reads below the target

Clean the cell, then test with a meter

Inspect cell

Scale, wear or a cell problem

Look at the cell for buildup

No flow / Waiting for flow

Water is not moving through the cell

Filter, valves, water level, flow switch

High salt

Salt is above the target range

Dilute with fresh water per the manual

Sensor error

The sensor module reads wrong

Call a pro

## What does low salt mean?

It means the system reads less salt than it needs. Hayward’s guide gives numbers. When the lights flash, the cell reports 2,400 to 2,700 ppm, and Hayward says this does not affect chlorine production. When the lights stay on solid, the cell reports 2,300 ppm or less and chlorine production is suspended.

Pentair uses different words and numbers on its IntelliChlor display:

- “ADD SALT” shows below 3,000 ppm. Chlorine is made at a reduced rate.
- “SYS OFF LOW SALT” shows below 2,600 ppm. Chlorine is not made.
- Pentair says to add salt until salinity reaches 3,600 ppm.
- “HI SALT” shows above 4,500 ppm. Pentair says to drain some water and refill with fresh water until salinity reaches 3,600 ppm.

Those are brand and model figures. Your cell may differ. Check the label and manual.

## Should I add salt right away?

No. Hayward’s guide says low salt readings “should ALWAYS be followed by a cell cleaning first and then an actual meter measurement of the salt level in the water.” It says never to add more salt in that case. A dirty cell can read low even when the water has plenty of salt.

Steps that follow the Hayward advice:

1. Test the water with an independent test or a calibrated salt meter.
2. Check that the cell model set in the control matches the model on the cell.
3. Inspect the cell for scale.
4. Clean the cell using your manual’s method.
5. Add salt only if the independent test shows it is low. Do not leave salt piled on the bottom.

Test the [salt level](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/salt-level) the same way each time, so you can compare readings.

## What does No Flow mean?

It means the system does not sense enough water moving through the cell. Hayward’s guide has a step to test the [flow switch](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/flow-switch) by plugging in a known working switch and holding it closed for 60 seconds. If the light stays on, it tells you to contact technical support. That is a test for a trained person.

Pentair states that its cell needs a flow rate of at least 25 GPM to make chlorine.

Plain checks for an owner:

- Is the pump running?
- Is the pump basket or skimmer basket full? Empty it.
- Is the filter pressure high? Check the pressure gauge against your filter manual.
- Are all valves open?
- Is the water level high enough to keep the skimmer drawing water?

If the cell and filter look fine and the warning stays, the flow switch may be the fault. Call a pro. Wiring and flow switch work on a cell is not a DIY job.

## What does Inspect Cell mean?

Often it means scale on the plates. Hayward’s guide has a step called “Calcified Cell” with the actions to inspect the cell for calcification and clean it. Hard water and high calcium leave [scale](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/scale) on surfaces and equipment. Our post on [calcium scale in Tarrant County](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/hard-water-calcium-scale-pool-tile-tarrant) explains the chemistry. Keeping calcium hardness in range helps slow it down.

Cell cleaning often uses diluted acid. Pentair’s manual warns to wear rubber gloves and eye protection, work in a well-ventilated area and always add acid to water, never water to acid. Follow the manual for your cell.

## What else can mimic a salt cell problem?

Water chemistry. A salt system is only as good as the water around it. Swim University lists a cyanuric acid range of 60 to 80 ppm for outdoor saltwater pools and suggests free chlorine around 4 to 5 ppm at those levels. Too little stabilizer burns off chlorine in the sun. Too much makes chlorine slow.

Pentair’s manual also warns not to use trichlor or dichlor tablets with a salt chlorinator. Read the product label before you add any chemical.

## When should I call a pro?

Call when:

- Cleaning the cell and testing salt does not clear the warning.
- A No Flow light stays on with a clean filter and open valves.
- The sensor shows an error.
- You see leaks, corrosion or burned wiring at the cell or power center.
- The cell is old and output stays low after cleaning.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does a low salt light mean on a salt system?

It means the cell reads salt below its target range. Hayward says flashing lights show 2,400 to 2,700 ppm and solid lights show 2,300 ppm or less, where chlorine production stops. Hayward also says to clean the cell and test with a meter before adding salt.

### What does No Flow mean on a salt chlorine generator?

The system does not sense enough water moving through the cell. Causes include a dirty filter, a closed valve, a low water level, a pump problem or a bad flow switch. Pentair's manual lists a minimum flow of 25 GPM to make chlorine.

### Should I add salt when the system says low salt?

Not first. Hayward's guide says low salt readings should be followed by a cell cleaning and then a meter test. It says never to add salt in that case until you have a real reading. Add salt only if an independent test shows it is low.

### How often should I clean a salt cell?

Follow your manufacturer. Pentair's manual covers cell cleaning and warns about acid safety. Hayward points to calcification as a cause of cell warnings. Hard North Texas water can leave scale, so many owners check the cell during routine service.
