# Repair or Replace a Pool Pump? A Simple Decision Guide

Repair a pump when one part has failed and the rest is in good shape. Replace it when the motor is worn, repairs keep returning, or the pump is old. Compare the repair quote to the cost of a new pump, and ask about energy use.

## Should I repair or replace my pool pump?

Repair a pump when one part has failed and the rest is in good shape. Replace it when the motor is worn, the pump is old, or repairs keep coming back. The right call depends on what failed, how old the pump is and what each option costs.

Use the checks below. Ask any pro to give you both options in writing. Marina Pool Services quotes each job and offers free estimates for qualifying services.

## What did the pump do?

The symptom points to the part. Some parts are cheap to fix. Others signal a worn motor.

Symptom

Likely part

Often repair or replace?

Won’t prime, air in basket

Lid [O-ring](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/lid-o-ring) or fitting

Repair

Leak under the pump

O-ring or [shaft seal](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/shaft-seal)

Repair

Hums, will not start

[Capacitor](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/capacitor), jam or worn motor

Repair if capacitor or jam. Replace motor if shaft is tight

Screeching

Worn [motor bearings](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/motor-bearings)

Often replace the motor

Shuts off when hot

Overheating, low voltage or failing motor

Depends on the cause

Noisy rumble

Air leak or [cavitation](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/cavitation)

Repair the cause

Leslie’s suggests that for old pumps, replacing the motor can make more sense than swapping small parts. It says a bad capacitor can be replaced, but “if your pump is old, consider replacing the motor instead.” It also says worn bearings can be changed, but “many pool owners opt to switch out the older motor for a new one.”

For a closer look at the humming case, read [pool pump humming but not starting](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/pool-pump-humming-not-starting). For air leaks, see [why a pump loses prime](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/pool-pump-loses-prime-air-leak).

## How old is the pump?

Age matters. A young pump with one failed part is a good repair. An old pump with a worn motor is a poor bet. Our [pool equipment lifespan guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-lifespan) covers typical ranges and what shortens them. Check the label on the pump for a date code or ask a pro to read it.

Heat, sun and run time all add wear. A pump in a hot, closed-in spot will age faster. Leslie’s notes that confined spaces and direct sun can push a motor to overheat.

## What do published costs say?

Published figures give a rough frame. They come from third parties and are not Marina prices.

Item

Published figure

Source and date

Pump replacement, national average

$1,300 (most pay $700 to $4,000)

Angi, 2026 data

Single-speed pump, installed range

$250 to $1,000

Angi, 2026 data

Variable-speed pump, installed range

$800 to $2,500

Angi, 2026 data

Pump repair

$100 to $700

Angi, 2026 data

Pump repair, national range

$202 to $941

Thumbtack, 2026

Angi says motor replacements and variable-speed fixes sit at the high end of repair costs. A practical rule is to ask for the repair price and the replace price side by side. If the repair is a large share of a new pump, replacement deserves a hard look. Your own quote will differ, and DFW prices may not match national averages. See the [pool pump buyer’s guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-pump-buyers-guide) for more.

## Does energy use change the answer?

It can. A variable-speed pump can run at lower speeds, which is designed to cut energy use. The federal government also sets rules for pool pumps and their motors. Under the Department of Energy (DOE) 2023 rule, pool pump motors sold separately are covered too. The DOE’s stated aim for the motor rule is to ensure replacement motors are “at least as efficient as originally intended by the DPPP manufacturer.”

Ask a pro which motors are available for your pump. Read our post on the [DOE variable-speed rule](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/variable-speed-pool-pump-doe-rule) for details and dates. Learn more about [variable-speed pumps](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/variable-speed-pump) and [single-speed pumps](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/single-speed-pump).

## Does a pro need a license to swap a pump?

For electrical pool devices, Texas has rules. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) says a Residential Appliance Installer (RAIL) license holder may install or replace pool pumps, motors, heaters, lights and automation on the load side of the control center. It says a variable-speed motor can be added to an existing pool without a new circuit if no amperage increase or main panel access is needed. If a job needs a new or upgraded line circuit, only a licensed electrical contractor with a designated master electrician may do it. Ask any company what it holds. See [RAIL license](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/rail-license).

## What other costs come with a swap?

Ask about these in the quote:

1. Part and labor, listed apart ([parts and labor](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/parts-and-labor)).
2. Any [diagnostic fee](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/diagnostic-fee) and whether it is credited to the repair.
3. Disposal of the old pump.
4. Plumbing changes, if the new pump has a different port size.
5. Warranty terms on the new pump, from the maker. See [equipment warranty](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/equipment-warranty).

Ask any company what warranty applies to your job.

## A simple decision path

Use this path as a start:

1. Is the problem a small part, such as an O-ring, seal or capacitor? If yes, repair is likely.
2. Is the motor shaft rough, tight or the bearings loud? If yes, lean toward a new motor or pump.
3. Is the pump old or has it failed before? If yes, lean toward replacement.
4. Is the repair a big share of the price of a new pump? If yes, compare in detail.
5. Do you want to cut energy use? If yes, ask about variable-speed.

## What will a pro do?

A pro will diagnose first, then explain your options. Marina’s site says it will “diagnose the issue, explain your options, and recommend solutions based on your pool and equipment.” Marina’s pump page lists inspection and diagnostics, repair and service, and replacement and installation. It services Hayward, Pentair, Jandy and Raypak equipment. For broader repair help, see our [pool equipment repair guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-repair).

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I repair or replace my pool pump?

Repair if one part failed, such as a seal, capacitor or O-ring, and the motor is in good shape. Replace if the motor is worn, the pump is old, or repairs keep coming back. Ask a pro to compare both options in writing.

### How much does a pool pump replacement cost?

Angi's 2026 data gives a national average of $1,300, with most homeowners paying $700 to $4,000. Thumbtack reports repairs at $202 to $941 nationally. These are third-party figures. Marina quotes each job.

### How much does a pool pump repair cost?

Angi's 2026 data says repairs run $100 to $700, with motor replacements and variable-speed fixes at the high end. Your price will depend on the part and the labor.

### Is a variable-speed pump worth it?

Variable-speed pumps are designed to save energy by running slower. Whether it pays back depends on your run time and electric rates. See our post on the federal pump rule and our pump buyer's guide.

### Can I replace just the motor?

Often yes. DOE's 2023 rule covers pool pump motors sold separately and says the aim is to ensure replacement motors are at least as efficient as the pump maker intended. Ask a pro what is available for your pump.
