# 12 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Pool Company in Grapevine

Ask every pool company 12 things: what each visit covers, who does the work, proof of insurance, license scope for equipment work, chemical billing, contract terms, how they handle problems, brands they service, how quotes work, response time, references and how to stop service.

## How do I choose a pool company in Grapevine?

Compare what each company does on a visit, how it bills, and who does the repairs. Ask the same 12 questions of every company and write down the answers. A good company answers plainly. A poor fit gets vague or pushes you to sign fast.

Use the list below. Each question has a short note on what a good answer sounds like.

## The 12 questions

#

Question

A good answer sounds like

1

What exactly happens on each visit?

A clear list: water testing, baskets, filter care, brushing, vacuuming

2

Who will service my pool?

A named crew or route, and how changes are handled

3

Are you insured? Can I see a certificate?

Yes, with a certificate and dates

4

What is your license scope for equipment work?

A plain statement of what they hold and what they do not

5

How are chemicals billed?

Included, itemized or billed at cost, in writing

6

What are the contract terms?

Length, change and cancel rules, price-change rules

7

What happens if my water turns green?

A plan, and a clear line between service and extra work

8

Which equipment brands do you service?

A direct list

9

How do quotes and repairs work?

Free or priced estimates, approval before work

10

How fast do you respond to a problem?

A realistic window, with no big promises

11

Can you share references?

Yes, or links to reviews

12

How do I stop service?

Simple, written steps

## What do the first few questions tell me?

They tell you how much a company is willing to put in writing. Questions 1 and 2 show the scope of weekly care. For comparison, Marina Pool Services lists these items on a visit: water balance (chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, conditioner and salt if applicable), emptied baskets, filter backwashing as needed, and vacuuming and brushing as needed. See the full [weekly pool service](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/pool-service-grapevine-tx) page.

If a company only says it will “clean the pool,” ask for more. For a deeper look at weekly care, read our [pool service guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-service).

## What should I ask about insurance?

Ask for proof, not just a yes. Request a certificate of insurance and check the dates. This protects you if someone is hurt or a pool is damaged on the job. Marina Pool Services states that it is insured through IPSSA, the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association. Ask any company for the same kind of proof. Our glossary explains [IPSSA](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/ipssa) and [liability insurance](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/liability-insurance).

IPSSA lists a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability coverage as a membership requirement on its benefits page. A membership is not the same as a certificate for your job, so still ask to see the paperwork.

## What about licenses and certifications?

Ask what the company holds for the work it will do at your home. The TDLR page we read covers equipment work, not routine cleaning. That work is licensed. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) says a Residential Appliance Installer (RAIL) holder may install or replace pool pumps, motors, heaters, underwater lights, GFCIs and automation on the load side of the control center. If a job needs a new or upgraded line circuit, TDLR says only a licensed electrical contractor with a designated master electrician may do it.

So if your job involves pool lights or a new circuit, ask who will do the electrical work and what they hold. See our [RAIL license](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/rail-license) and [TDLR](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/tdlr) entries.

The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance also offers the CPO course. It covers pool operations and is common for commercial staff. A [CPO certification](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/cpo-certification) is a plus, not a must.

## How should chemical billing work?

Ask this early, because it is a common source of surprise. A company may include chemicals in a flat fee, bill them at cost, or add a surcharge. Angi notes that in the Dallas area, hard-water chemicals such as clarifiers and scale control can add $15 to $40 per month. That is Angi’s figure, not Marina’s. Marina quotes each job. Read more in our [chemical surcharge](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/chemical-surcharge) entry and [pool service cost guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-service-cost-dfw).

## What should a contract say?

A contract should say how long it lasts, how to change or stop it, and when prices can change. Ask for it in writing before the first visit. If a company will not share terms, that is your answer.

## How do I judge repairs and quotes?

Ask whether the company diagnoses first, explains the options, and gets your approval before it starts. Marina’s site says it will “diagnose the problem and recommend practical solutions based on your pool and equipment,” and that it focuses on equipment condition “rather than recommending unnecessary work.” Ask any company how it handles a repair that costs more than expected.

Also ask which brands it works on. Marina says it services and installs Hayward, Pentair, Jandy and Raypak equipment. Our [pool equipment repair guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-repair) explains how repairs usually unfold.

## Is there more to check?

Yes. Our longer guide on [how to hire a pool company in Texas](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/how-to-hire-a-pool-company-texas) has a full checklist. Local fit matters too. A company based in your city can reach you quickly. Marina Pool Services is family-owned, based in Grapevine, and its family lives here. ## Frequently asked questions

### How do I choose a pool service company in Grapevine?

Compare what each visit covers, proof of insurance, how chemicals are billed, contract terms and who does equipment repairs. Ask for answers in writing. Pick the company that explains things plainly and does not push work you do not need.

### Does a pool company need a license in Texas?

The TDLR guidance we read covers equipment work, not routine cleaning. TDLR says a Residential Appliance Installer (RAIL) holder may replace pool pumps, motors, heaters, lights and automation on the load side of the control center. Ask what a company holds.

### What is a CPO certification?

CPO stands for Certified Pool and Spa Operator, a training program from the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance. It covers pool operation, including water care. It is common for commercial pool staff. Ask whether a technician holds it, but treat it as one signal among several.

### What should proof of insurance show?

Ask for a certificate of insurance. It should show liability coverage and the dates it is active. Marina Pool Services says it is insured through IPSSA, the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association. Ask any company for the certificate and read the dates.

### Should I sign a long contract?

Read the terms first. Ask how to pause, change or cancel, and whether prices can change. If a company will not put terms in writing, move on.
