# Pool Pump Humming but Not Starting: Causes and Fixes

A humming pool pump that will not start usually has one of three problems: a failed start capacitor, a jammed impeller, or a bound motor shaft. Turn off power at the breaker first. Check for debris you can see. Leave capacitor and wiring work to a qualified pro.

## Why does my pool pump hum but not start?

A humming pump has power but cannot turn. The motor is trying to spin and something stops it. The usual causes are a failed start capacitor, a jammed impeller, or a motor shaft that is bound up. These are the three main items on Leslie’s pump troubleshooting guide for a motor that “hums, but does not start.”

Each cause has a different fix. Some checks are safe for a homeowner. Others are for a qualified pro.

## What should I do first?

Turn the pump off at the breaker. Do not keep trying to start it. A motor that hums without turning draws power and can overheat. Then run through the safe checks below.

1. Switch off the pump at its breaker and leave it off.
2. Look at the time clock or controller. Make sure the pump is not set to run on a schedule that keeps firing.
3. Check that the water level is correct and the baskets are clear.
4. Note any smell of burning, or any water around the motor.
5. If you see damage, scorching or water in the motor, stop and call a pro.

If you are unsure at any point, stop. Electrical work is for a qualified pro.

## What are the three common causes?

Cause

What it is

Safe for a homeowner?

Failed start [capacitor](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/capacitor)

A part that gives the motor a jolt of power to start turning

No. Leave to a pro

Jammed [impeller](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/impeller)

Debris blocks the spinning part inside the pump

Maybe, with power off and care

Bound shaft or worn [motor bearings](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/motor-bearings)

The motor shaft is tight or rough

Check by feel only. Repair is for a pro

### A bad capacitor

The capacitor gives the motor the push it needs to start. Leslie’s says: “No jolt, no start.” If the pump hums and does not turn, a bad capacitor is one of the first suspects.

Leslie’s notes you can replace a capacitor, but it is “best done by a professional.” It also warns that the capacitor can still store power, so be careful. That is a good reason to leave this job alone unless you are trained. If your pump is old, Leslie’s suggests thinking about replacing the motor instead.

### A jammed impeller

Leaves, pebbles and small debris can block the impeller. Leslie’s says to turn off power to the pump, remove the screws in the middle of the pump body, pull the assembly from the housing, remove the gasket from the impeller and clear debris. Then you reassemble.

This takes care. If you are not comfortable opening the pump, call a pro. A gasket or [lid O-ring](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/lid-o-ring) that is damaged during reassembly can cause air leaks later. See our post on [why a pump loses prime](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/pool-pump-loses-prime-air-leak).

### A bound shaft

Leslie’s suggests turning the motor shaft by hand, with power off, to get the feel of it. If the shaft feels tight or does not turn smoothly, it may be time to replace the [pump motor](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/pump-motor). Worn bearings are a common reason. A shaft that wobbles or has play can also point to wear.

## What other problems look similar?

Several problems can feel like a hum. Compare them here.

Symptom

Possible cause

Next step

Hums, no spin

Capacitor, impeller, shaft

Breaker off, then follow the checks above

Runs, then shuts off

Overheating or low voltage

Check vents and shade. Call a pro for voltage

Screeching

Worn bearings

Plan for a pro visit

Rattling like gravel

Starved for water or cavitation

Check baskets and water level

Won’t start, no hum

No power

Check the breaker and time clock

Leslie’s also lists overheating, low voltage and loose wiring as reasons a pump may shut off. It recommends calling a licensed electrician for voltage questions.

## Is a hot Texas summer a factor?

Heat can stress a pump motor. Leslie’s says high ambient temperatures, poor ventilation and direct sun can lead to overheating. Make sure the motor vents are clear and nothing blocks airflow. Shade can help. These are general tips from Leslie’s, not a Marina claim.

## Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when the problem is one part. Replacement can make sense when the motor is old and worn, or when several parts have failed. See our guide on [repair or replace a pool pump](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/repair-or-replace-pool-pump) and the [pool pump buyer’s guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-pump-buyers-guide). The [pool equipment lifespan guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-lifespan) can help you judge age.

## What will a pro do?

A pro will cut power, test the motor and check each likely cause in order. That usually covers the capacitor, the impeller, the shaft and the electrical supply. Marina’s pump page lists inspection and diagnostics, repair and service, and replacement and installation. Marina says it services and installs Hayward, Pentair, Jandy and Raypak equipment.

Ask about the [diagnostic fee](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/diagnostic-fee) up front, and ask for the options in writing. Marina quotes each job and offers free estimates for qualifying services.

## Which signs mean call now?

Call a pro right away if you see any of these:

- A burning smell or smoke
- Water around the motor or electrical box
- A breaker that trips again and again
- A shaft that will not turn by hand
- Sparks or buzzing from wiring

Keep children and pets away from the equipment pad. Do not touch wiring.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does my pool pump hum but not start?

The motor is getting power but cannot turn. The most common causes are a failed start capacitor, an impeller jammed with debris, or a motor shaft that is bound up from worn bearings. A pro can tell which one it is.

### Can I replace a pool pump capacitor myself?

Leslie's says it is best done by a professional, because a capacitor can still store power after the pump is off. Do not open the motor end if you are unsure. Call a qualified pro.

### Is it safe to keep trying to start a humming pump?

No. A motor that hums without turning draws power and can overheat. Turn off the breaker and stop. Repeated tries can damage the motor.

### How do I check if the impeller is stuck?

With power off at the breaker, remove the pump basket and look for debris. Leslie's also describes opening the pump housing to clear debris from the impeller. If you are not sure how to do that, call a pro.

### When should I replace the motor or pump?

If the shaft feels rough or tight, or the pump is old and the motor is worn, replacement may make more sense than repair. A pro can compare options with you.
