# Pool Filter Pressure Too High: What It Means

High filter pressure means water is meeting more resistance than normal. Compare the gauge to your own clean baseline. When it rises 8 to 10 psi above that number, clean or backwash the filter. If pressure stays high after cleaning, check closed valves, worn media and damaged parts.

## What does high pool filter pressure mean?

High pressure means water meets more resistance on its way through the filter. The most common reason is a dirty filter. But closed valves, worn media and damaged parts can cause it too. The first step is to compare the gauge reading to your own clean baseline.

The gauge on top of the filter reads pressure on the inlet side, before water passes through the sand, cartridge or DE grids. ProTuff explains that as debris builds up, “water has to push harder to get through, and pressure climbs.”

## What is a clean baseline?

A clean baseline is the gauge reading right after the filter is fully cleaned. ProTuff says there is no universal number, because pressure depends on pump size, pipe size, plumbing layout, filter size and media type. A reading of 15 psi can be normal for one pool and too high for another.

To set your baseline:

1. Clean or backwash the filter until it is as clean as it can be.
2. Run the pump at its normal speed.
3. Read the gauge and write down the number.
4. Put it on tape on the filter housing, so anyone can see it.

ProTuff gives typical clean ranges as a starting point only: 10 to 15 psi for sand, 8 to 15 for cartridge and 8 to 12 for DE. Your own number matters more. See our glossary for the [pressure gauge](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/pressure-gauge), [sand filter](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/sand-filter), [cartridge filter](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/cartridge-filter) and [DE filter](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/de-filter).

## When should I clean the filter?

Clean it when pressure rises about 8 to 10 psi above your baseline. ProTuff calls this the “10 PSI rule.” Leslie’s gives a similar cue: if you are above 10 psi over the clean reading specified by the manufacturer, clean the filter. Here is how that looks for a 12 psi baseline, using ProTuff’s example:

Gauge reading

Meaning

What to do

12 psi

Baseline, filter is clean

Nothing

17 psi

Partly loaded

Watch it. Clean within the week

20 to 22 psi

Dirty

Clean or backwash now

25 psi or more

Very dirty or clogged

Clean now and inspect the media

Do not wait too long. ProTuff warns that sustained high pressure adds heat and wear to the pump motor and stresses O-rings and fittings.

## How do I clean it?

The method depends on the filter type. A short summary:

- **Sand:** [backwash](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/backwash) with the multiport valve, then rinse. Never move the valve handle while the pump runs.
- **Cartridge:** turn off the pump, remove the cartridges and rinse them with a hose.
- **DE:** backwash, then recharge with fresh DE powder.

Follow your filter maker’s manual for the exact steps. Turn off the pump before opening any filter.

## What else can cause high pressure?

Several things besides a dirty filter. Check these before you assume the media is bad.

Cause

Clue

Next step

Closed or partly closed return valve

Sudden jump, all else normal

Open all valves fully. ProTuff says one closed return can add 5 to 10 psi

Algae bloom

Green water, fast climb

Treat the water, and expect to clean the filter more than once

Heavy rain or pollen

Spike within a day

Clean when the gauge says so

Worn sand

Pressure stays high after backwash

Sand may be due for replacement

Torn DE grids

White cloud in the pool, high pressure

Inspect and replace damaged grids

Collapsed cartridge

Won’t clean down

Inspect for cracks and replace

Clogged or broken laterals

High pressure, sand in the pool

Needs the tank opened by a pro

Failed gauge

Needle stuck or reads zero

Replace the gauge

ProTuff says sand media can wear after 5 to 7 years, and that a cartridge element may last 2 to 4 years. Those are one source’s ranges, and your equipment may differ. Our [pool equipment lifespan guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-lifespan) and [pool filter buyer’s guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-filter-buyers-guide) have more.

## What if pressure climbs again within a day or two?

That is a signal, not a maintenance chore. ProTuff says pressure that returns to high within 24 to 48 hours of a backwash means you should find the root cause. It might be coated media, an algae bloom or a physical fault. Do not keep backwashing without finding out why. Backwashing also uses a lot of water, which matters in dry spells.

For an algae bloom, see the [green pool guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/how-to-clear-a-green-pool). Dead algae can load a filter quickly.

## What does low pressure mean?

Low pressure does not mean the filter is clean. ProTuff says a sudden reading 2 psi or more below baseline can mean an air leak on the suction side, a blocked basket, a worn impeller, a pump losing prime or low water. Our posts on [why a pump loses prime](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/pool-pump-loses-prime-air-leak) and [a humming pump](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/post/pool-pump-humming-not-starting) cover those cases.

## What will a pro do?

A pro will check the gauge, valves and flow, then service the filter by type. Marina’s filter page describes cartridge cleaning (remove, clean, inspect and maintain flow), DE cleaning and backwashing (backwash, replace DE media and check performance), and filter replacement and installation. Marina services Hayward, Pentair, Jandy and Raypak equipment.

Marina quotes each job and offers free estimates for qualifying services.

## Which readings should I note for the pro?

Write down these details before you call:

- Your clean baseline, if you know it
- The current reading and when it rose
- Filter type and brand
- When you last cleaned it
- Any recent storm, algae or heavy use

## Frequently asked questions

### What psi is too high for a pool filter?

There is no single number. It depends on your own clean baseline. ProTuff says to clean the filter when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above that baseline. Leslie's says to clean once you are about 10 psi over the manufacturer's clean reading.

### Why is my filter pressure high right after backwashing?

Common causes include a closed return valve, worn sand, oil or scale coating the media, or damaged parts. If backwashing no longer brings pressure back to baseline, the filter needs a closer look.

### Can high pressure damage my pump?

Yes. ProTuff says sustained high back-pressure makes the motor work harder, adds heat and speeds wear. It also stresses O-rings, fittings and the filter tank. Clean the filter at the 8 to 10 psi mark.

### What does low filter pressure mean?

Low pressure does not mean a clean filter. ProTuff says a sudden drop of 2 psi or more can point to an air leak, a blocked basket, a worn impeller or low water level.

### How often should I clean the filter?

Clean when the gauge says so, not on a fixed date. Pressure rises faster after storms, heavy use, pollen and algae. Check the gauge at least weekly in swim season.
