# Is My Pool Leaking? The Bucket Test and Next Steps

A pool can lose about a quarter inch of water a day to evaporation. To tell evaporation from a leak, run the bucket test: compare the water drop inside a bucket on a pool step with the drop in the pool over 24 hours. If the pool drops more, you likely have a leak. Call a leak specialist.

GuideUpdated October 21, 20267 min read

## Evaporation is normal

American Leak Detection says pools lose about a quarter of an inch of water each day. Wind, humidity and sun change that rate.

## The bucket test

Put a marked bucket of pool water on a step, mark the pool level, wait 24 hours and compare. A bigger drop in the pool points to a leak.

## Turn off the autofill

Any water added during the test hides the result. Rain also ruins it, so start over after rain.

## Leaks need a specialist

Marina does not list leak detection or leak repair. A leak specialist handles that. Marina can check the equipment pad for visible leaks.

Your pool level drops. Is it a leak, or is it just summer? Most owners ask this at some point, and the answer matters. A leak wastes water and money and can harm the ground around the pool. Normal evaporation is harmless.

This guide explains evaporation, walks through the bucket test step by step and tells you what to do next. It leans on American Leak Detection, a leak detection company that publishes its test method. We opened its pages and quote what they say.

One thing up front. Marina Pool Services does not list leak detection or leak repair. A leak specialist handles that work. What Marina can do is check the equipment pad for visible leaks during an equipment inspection. We explain that below.

## How much water does a pool lose to evaporation?

A pool loses about a quarter of an inch of water a day to evaporation, according to American Leak Detection. That is the common rule of thumb. Wind, humidity and sunlight change the rate.

American Leak Detection explains the factors this way:

- **Wind** can blow water particles away and speed up evaporation.
- **Humidity** matters. Humid air slows water loss and dry air speeds it up.
- **Sunlight** adds to loss. Sunny, dry places lose water faster.

North Texas has hot, sunny summers and dry spells, so expect more loss in July and August than in April. See the [evaporation loss](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/evaporation-loss) glossary entry. Our [North Texas pool care guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/north-texas-pool-care) covers summer water levels in more depth.

The page does not set a number that means “leak.” That is why a side-by-side test beats guessing from inches.

## What is the bucket test?

The bucket test compares how much water the pool loses with how much a bucket of pool water loses in the same place. The bucket shows evaporation alone, because it sits in the same sun, wind and air as the pool. If the pool drops more than the bucket, the extra loss is not evaporation.

American Leak Detection publishes this method. See the [bucket test](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/bucket-test) glossary entry for a short definition.

### What do you need?

You need very little.

- A standard 5-gallon bucket
- A marker, or waterproof tape
- A calm day with no rain in the forecast
- A way to turn off your autofill

### What are the steps?

Follow these steps in order. They match American Leak Detection’s published method.

1. **Turn off the autofill.** If your pool has an [automatic water leveler](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/automatic-water-leveler), shut it off. Any water added during the test hides the result.
2. **Fill the bucket.** Fill the bucket with pool water to about 1 inch below the rim.
3. **Set the bucket on a step.** Put it on the first or second pool step so the bucket sits about 5 inches below the surface.
4. **Mark both levels.** Mark the water level inside the bucket. Mark the pool’s water line on the outside of the bucket or on the tile.
5. **Wait 24 hours.** American Leak Detection says to check after exactly 24 hours. Checking later can give inaccurate results.
6. **Compare the drops.** Measure how far the water fell inside the bucket and how far it fell in the pool.
7. **Do not run extra water.** Keep the autofill off and do not top off the pool until the test ends.

Step

What to do

Why it matters

1

Turn off autofill

Added water hides a leak

2

Fill bucket to about 1 inch below the rim

Gives room without overflow

3

Set bucket about 5 inches under on a step

Same conditions as the pool

4

Mark inside and outside levels

Gives you two clear starting points

5

Wait exactly 24 hours

Later checks can be wrong

6

Compare the drops

The difference is the answer

Should you run the pump during the test? American Leak Detection’s page, as we read it, does not say. Run your pool as you normally do, and keep the same pump schedule for the whole test so the conditions stay the same. If you want a stricter test for a suspected equipment leak, ask a leak specialist how they run theirs.

## How do you read the result?

Compare the two drops. The pool dropping more than the bucket points to a leak. The two dropping about the same points to evaporation.

Result

What it likely means

What to do

Pool dropped more than the bucket

A leak is likely

Call a leak specialist

Pool and bucket dropped about the same

Normal evaporation

Keep watching; repeat in a different week if still worried

Rain fell during the test

Test is not valid

Wait for a dry forecast and start over

Autofill ran during the test

Test is not valid

Turn it off and start over

American Leak Detection says that when the outside level drops more than the inside level, the loss likely indicates a pool leak, and you should call a professional. It does not state the equal-drop result in so many words. That reading follows from how the test works.

One test is a good first check, not a final word. If the numbers are close, repeat it on a calm day. If the pool still drops a lot more than the bucket, treat it as a leak.

## What are other signs of a leak?

The bucket test is the best first step, but other signs can back it up. Watch for these clues, and note that none of them proves a leak alone.

- You keep topping off the pool. American Leak Detection notes that if you are constantly filling the pool, there may be a leak.
- The autofill runs often.
- Soil near the pool is soggy or sinks.
- The water level stops falling at a certain height.
- Air keeps getting into the pump basket, or you see bubbles at the returns.
- The water bill climbs without another cause.

Some of these also point to equipment problems, such as an air leak on the suction side of the pump. That is a good reason to look at the pad. See the [pool pump repair](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/our-services/pool-pump-repair) page.

## What can Marina Pool Services do?

Marina does not list leak detection or leak repair. A leak specialist handles that. This guide will not say otherwise, and we suggest you ask the specialist about their methods and what they find.

What Marina does offer is a [pool equipment inspection](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/our-services/pool-equipment-inspection). Marina’s site says the inspection covers pumps, filters, heaters, valves, plumbing connections, timers and controls. During that visit Marina can check the equipment pad for visible leaks, such as drips at a pump, filter or union.

That is a useful step when the pool level is dropping. A visible drip at the pad is a leak you can see and fix. It also helps rule the pad in or out before you hire a specialist. If the pad is dry and the bucket test says the pool is losing water, the leak is likely elsewhere, such as in the shell, the plumbing underground or a fitting.

For related reading on equipment lifespan, see our [pool equipment lifespan guide](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/guides/pool-equipment-lifespan). For a quick look at pad terms, see [pool plumbing](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/pool-plumbing).

### What can a leak specialist do that a pool service company cannot?

Leak specialists use tools to find where water escapes. These can include pressure testing of lines and listening or camera equipment. See [leak detection](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/leak-detection) and [pressure test](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/pressure-test). That is a different trade from routine pool service, and it is why we point you to one.

When you hire a specialist, ask what methods they use, what the report will show and who handles the repair after they find the leak. Some detect only. Others also repair. Compare before you commit.

## What should you do while you wait?

Protect the equipment and track the loss. A few simple habits help.

1. **Keep the water above the skimmer opening.** If the level falls too low, the pump can pull air and run dry. Running a pump dry can damage it.
2. **Log the water level.** Mark the tile or a ruler at the same time each day for a week. Note rain and heat.
3. **Do not drain the pool.** Draining can harm the pool shell. Ask a specialist first.
4. **Watch the pad.** Look at the pump, filter and heater for drips each day.
5. **Keep the chemistry normal.** A leaking pool still needs sanitizer. Adding water dilutes chemicals, so test more often.

Weekly service helps here. Marina’s weekly visit covers water balance, emptying baskets and checking visible equipment issues. See [weekly pool service](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/pool-service-grapevine-tx). That is not leak detection, but a regular visit may notice that the level keeps dropping.

## What are the usual mistakes with the bucket test?

Most failed tests come down to a few slips.

- **Autofill left on.** It refills the pool and hides the loss.
- **Rain.** American Leak Detection says rain invalidates the test.
- **Wrong timing.** Check at 24 hours, not 30 or 48.
- **Bucket in the shade or on the deck.** Set it in the pool, on a step, so it shares the pool’s conditions.
- **Bucket sitting too high or too low.** Keep the bucket water level near the pool level, as the method describes.
- **Splashing or swimming.** Keep people out during the test.

## Next step

## Frequently asked questions

### How much water should a pool lose to evaporation?

American Leak Detection says pools lose about a quarter of an inch of water each day, with wind, humidity and sunlight changing the rate. Dry, sunny, windy conditions speed it up. North Texas summers are hot and dry at times, so expect more loss then. The bucket test is the reliable way to check your own pool.

### How do I do the pool bucket test?

Turn off any autofill, fill a bucket with pool water to about an inch below the rim and set it on a pool step so it sits about 5 inches under. Mark the water level inside and outside. Wait 24 hours, then compare both drops. A bigger drop in the pool suggests a leak.

### Can I find a pool leak myself?

You can learn whether you have one with the bucket test and a look at the equipment pad. Pinpointing where the leak is, especially in buried pipes or the shell, usually takes a leak specialist with the right tools. Guessing can lead to digging or repairs in the wrong place.

### Does Marina Pool Services fix pool leaks?

Marina Pool Services does not list leak detection or leak repair. A leak specialist handles that work. Marina does inspect pool equipment, and an equipment inspection can include a look at the pad for visible leaks at the pump, filter, heater and connections.

### What if the bucket test shows the pool and bucket dropped the same amount?

Then the loss looks like normal evaporation, not a leak. American Leak Detection does not state this outcome in so many words, but the logic follows: the bucket shows evaporation alone. If you still feel the loss is large, repeat the test on a calm, dry day or ask a pro to check.

### Should I keep adding water if my pool is leaking?

Short term, you may need to keep the water above the skimmer so the pump does not run dry. Running a pump low on water can damage it. Do not ignore a suspected leak, though, since ongoing loss wastes water and can harm the ground around the pool. Call a leak specialist soon.
