# Pool filter

The pool filter is the equipment that traps dirt and fine particles from the water.

The filter cleans water as it passes through. Without it, even a well-chlorinated pool turns cloudy. There are three main types: [cartridge](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/cartridge-filter), [sand](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/sand-filter), and [DE](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/de-filter).

A dirty filter shows up as a high pressure reading, weak flow, or cloudy water. Clean or backwash it when pressure rises. Check the gauge each week. A cracked tank, a leaking valve, or worn media means repair. Marina Pool Services repairs pool filters. Do not wait for a failed filter to show up as a green pool.
