# Pool deck

The pool deck is the surface around the pool, often concrete, travertine, or pavers.

The deck is where people walk, sit, and set up chairs. It sheds rain, and it protects the soil around the shell.

In North Texas, clay soil moves with wet and dry cycles, so decks can crack or shift. Watch for gaps at the coping, standing water, and pieces that rise or sink. Keep the joint between deck and coping sealed. A [joint sealing service](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/our-services/deck-o-seal) can help stop water from getting under the slab.
