# Motor bearings

Motor bearings are parts that let the motor shaft spin, and worn ones make a screaming sound.

Bearings sit at each end of the motor. Water from a bad [shaft seal](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/shaft-seal) or just plain age wears them down. A worn bearing gives a high squeal or grinding sound, often loudest at startup.

A squeal means the motor is on borrowed time. Replacing bearings is possible, but if the motor is old, replacement of the whole [motor](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/pump-motor) is often better. Turn the pump off if it screams. Running it longer can cause heat, a trip, or a seized motor. Call a pro.
