# Freeze protection

Freeze protection is a set of steps that keep water moving or drained so equipment does not freeze.

Common steps include running the pump, using a freeze sensor that starts equipment when it gets cold, and draining exposed lines. A freeze sensor and a controller can turn equipment on by themselves.

No method works if the power fails, as in a winter storm. Know how to drain your equipment by hand, or have a pro show you. Marina Pool Services offers [Freeze Guard and winterization](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/our-services/freeze-guard). Check the system before cold arrives, not after.
