# Filter cleaning

Filter cleaning is a deep clean or replacement of filter media so the filter can trap dirt again.

A dirty filter slows flow and strains the pump. Cartridges are removed and rinsed or soaked. Sand filters are backwashed. DE filters are backwashed and recharged with fresh DE powder.

A rising pressure gauge is the main cue to clean. Pollen season, storms, and algae make filters load fast. Marina Pool Services offers [pool filter cleaning and repair](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/our-services/pool-filter-repair) for each type. Clean on a schedule rather than waiting for poor flow to show up.
