# Enzyme treatment

An enzyme treatment is a product that breaks down oils and organic waste in the water.

Enzymes eat the oils, lotions, and organic waste that make a waterline ring and feed chloramines. They are a helper that eases the load on chlorine. They do not sanitize.

Enzyme products fit pools with heavy use, trees, or pets. Add them on a schedule from the label, and keep chlorine up as usual. If your pool still smells or turns cloudy, test for [combined chlorine](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/combined-chlorine) and look at your filter. Enzymes will not fix a failed pump or filter.
