# Chlorine odor

Chlorine odor is a strong smell that usually signals chloramines, not too much chlorine.

A pool with a strong chlorine smell usually has too little active chlorine, not too much. The smell is from [chloramines](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/chloramine), which build up when chlorine bonds with waste.

CDC says chloramines irritate eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract. Test [combined chlorine](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/combined-chlorine). If it is above 0.4 ppm, a [breakpoint chlorination](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/breakpoint-chlorination) can clear the odor. Shower before swimming helps too. If the smell returns fast, look at circulation and filter health.
