# Air leak

An air leak is a spot where air is sucked into the system, causing bubbles and weak flow.

Air in the pump basket or air bubbles at the return jets mean air is getting in. Air robs the pump of water and can hurt the motor.

Top causes are a loose or worn [lid O-ring](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/lid-o-ring), a low water level, a cracked fitting on the suction side, or a failed [shaft seal](https://marinapool.multisites.ai/glossary/shaft-seal). Check the easy ones first, like the lid and water level. Pinpointing a leak in buried pipe takes tools and know-how. A pro can find the source and fix it.
